I created: re-useable straw bags

Since implementing a more 'eco-friendly' lifestyle, I try to bring my re-useable straw with me, especially when I know I'll be somewhere and getting a drink. I realize turning down one single-use straw likely won't make a difference, but by refusing all single-use straws and encouraging my friends to do the same, we can start to implement change and further conversations. Especially if all of us start doing so.

That being said, there are a few hurdles I've found with carting my straw around with me:

  1. The straw gets dirty from being stuffed into my bag or purse

  2. Sometimes, I can't find the straw

  3. I tend to leave the straw at home

The solution... make a bag to put my re-useable straws in!

What I Used

These bags were a very beginner sewing project, and could be made from any material you have kicking around. I choose to use bright, fun fabrics; not only did they turn out super cute, but they are easy to find in a bag or purse. To have them close, I used string and ribbon, depending on the look and style you are trying to achieve (or based on what you have around the house).

What I Did

I roughly measured the length and width of the bags based on the type of straws I typically use (which are the ones with a curved end) keeping in mind to add seam allowance. On each of the thin ends (soon to be the tops of the bag) I sewed a channel for the drawstring. With the good sides together, I sewed the remaining edges closed. For this step, it's important that I didn't sew shut the channels I previously made. I flipped the bags right-side out and threaded the string through that channel. After I knotted the ends of the drawstring, my project was done! It really was that easy... which made making multiple bags a no brainer.

I'm very happy with how these turned out. The project was quick and easy, and allowed for a lot of customization. I've been gifting these to friends and family. Not only are they cute, but it's a great way to remind others to refuse single-use straws and opt to bring their own. I can't wait to make more of these bags and play around with the design.

If you use re-useable straws, which style do you prefer? I'm still debating between the classic metal straw and the flexible silicone one.

Keep creating.
